Chapter Eight

I rub my eyes, trying not to let the tiredness from the night before take over. If I'd had a choice, I'd have stayed in bed longer and come into work later, but I'd gotten a message from Elias that we were wanted for a briefing, and that's that. I must admit, this is a part of the Agency I'm not so keen on.

"Here," Elias says, placing a coffee in front of me as he enters the room and takes a seat next to me.

"Thank you."

"I thought you'd need it."

"I do. It's far too early." My head pounds, almost as if I have a hangover instead of just being tired from the night before.

"It won't happen too often, promise."

"I'll hold you to that. But now you owe me two lasagnas."

He chuckles. "If that's what it takes, I'll gladly pay the price."

"Excellent. I look forward to it."

The door swings open, cutting off our conversation as the boss strides in. He slaps a folder down on the desk and stares at the two of us.

"We have new information."

"Already?" Elias asks, not keeping the surprise out of his voice.

"One of Johnson's informants revealed the location of Regina Forbes. And it's not the building the two of you were staking out last night," Michelson says, a hint of accusation in his voice.

As if we haven't already realised we wasted our time last night.

"Okay, so what do we need to do about it?" Elias asks, but I can hear his real question.

Why have we been called in because of a piece of information?

"She's being moved in two days time and we need to get her out before then."

"Ah." Elias leans back in his chair and crosses his arms. "That's not enough time to prepare."

"It's going to have to be," Michelson replies.

"I refuse the mission," Elias says firmly. "Harper is still a new agent, and even if she wasn't, that's not enough time to plan a successful and safe mission."

Michelson leans in, crowding into Elias' space. "If you don't do this, I'll find someone else to take your place. Not just on this job, but permanently."

I reach out and place a hand on Elias' arm.

"We'll do it," I say, trying not to show my hesitation. I'm a little unnerved by the idea that my boss wants to put me in so much danger straight away, but I don't want Elias to lose his job over me. I know we'll be able to do a good job despite that.

"Good girl," Michelson says, finally standing back and letting Elias have his space.

My eye twitches at the fake endearment. Who does he think he is to talk to me like that?

I don't call him out. Maybe when I'm more established in the department and have a more secure job, I will. But right now, the two of us being able to walk out of this room still employed is my main goal.

Elias tenses under my touch, seeming just as annoyed as I am. But he can't show it either.
